Fishing;
Lots of fish, miles of clear water, wildlife, beautiful Alaska mountain scenery and great fishing!

Fly Fishermen, Spin Fishermen - regardless, our rivers will afford you action filled days. Your guide will drive you from location to location on the river to keep you on fresh fish and while most fishing is only a moderate walk from the vehicle, once there you will have plenty of water and room to fish. While most rivers only enjoy a pink spawn on even years our rivers experience a spawn annually, and what action. Pinks up to 8 lbs.are common and their table fare is excellent. The big dogs, (Chum) are the first to enter our rivers and fish up to 15 lbs. are caught each season. Whether your using a salmon bunny or a #4 vibrex you are in for great action. These strong fish will test your rod and line every time! With the cooler temperatures of late August come the Silvers, big, shiny and fast. Fishermen continue to be amazed day after day at the strength and size of our Silvers. Silvers up to 18 lbs. have been caught and many in the 14 lb. class are caught regularly. Egg sucking leeches, salmon bunnies, #4 vibrex or mepps spinners, they all wok well. When you need a break and want to catch little guys we have the perfect fish; Dolly Varden. Actually a Char, they spawn annually and feast on the salmon roe. We use a single egg pattern on either a fly rod or spinning rod yielding equally good results. Orange and pink egg patterns work best.

Fishing Equipment;
At Rocky River Lodge, we provide all spin fish equipment. A quality Fenwick graphite rod complemented with a Shimano reel and 14 lb. mono line are standard equipment and available daily at no cost.
We suggest a fishing vest to contain a small lure or fly box, line cutters, split shot, quality ball bearing swivels and 6" needle nose pliers.
Lightweight waist or chest waders - hip boots are not suggested.
A gore - tex hat.
Quality rain suit - jacket will suffice with waist or chest waders.
Quality "Polarized" sunglasses - this is a priority item if you want to catch fish
A small waterproof knapsack for your lunch, rain jacket, camera or ??
Lures
Pinks - #2 mepps or Blue Fox vibrex, Rainbow trout, pink, orange or green colors, 1/8 oz. pixies and comparable small spoons.
Silvers and Chums - #4 mepps or Blue Fox vibrex spinners in Rainbow trout, pink, orange or green colors and mepps #4 flying C and #4 long cast. Also we suggest you bring some with tails.
Dollies - a 5/16 or 1/4 egg in orange or pink, soft gel eggs work very well if you can buy them.

Fly Fishing;

Because our rivers are inaccessible to the outside world we are able to offer incredible fly fishing opportunities. Each fishing group is limited to 6 fishermen and our numerous accessible locations on the river will give you ample room to work your rod and move about freely. Most wading is done in knee high water and your guide is always close by to assist you in every way. I would by happy to chat with you about our rivers, the fly fishing and equipment and invite you to call or email.
Pink Salmon - a 5 or 6 wt rod and comparable reel loaded with floating line
Flies - #4 or 6 popsicle, #4 bunnies, #4 Egg sucking leech, pinks, purples and greens.
Chum Salmon - A 7 or 8 wt rod and comparable reel loaded with floating line.
Flies - #2 salmon bunny.
Silver Salmon - a 7 or 8 wt rod and comparable reel loaded with a sink tip line.
Flies - # 2 or 4 popsicle, #2 or 4 bunnies, # 4 egg sucking leech, pinks, purples, blues, oranges and greens.
Dollies - a 5 wt rod and comparable reel loaded with floating line.
A 1/4 egg pattern, bead or soft gel in orange or pink work very well. Matching the roe color is critical.

Rivers;
Clear, cold and endless, each river offers great fishing!

Both Rocky and Windy River are considered Alaska coastal watersheds which are impacted by the tide changes every six hours. Each high tide brings more fresh fish into the rivers and that equates to great angling action every day. As a guest of Rocky River Lodge you will enjoy regulated fishing rights to Rocky and Windy Rivers because our licensing agreement keeps the outside fishing pressure out. This agreement ensures fishermen the opportunity to work their fly rod without someone else on top of them or the freedom to wade to another pool or the opportunity to just wade around the next bend in the river because you seek the adventure, regardless; it's all possible without interference from anyone else.
Fishing of this quality is priceless!

Salt Water Fishing;
For you ocean fishermen who would like to include or add a day of salt water fishing to your trip we have excellent opportunities in Homer and Sledovia to fish for huge Halibut (barn doors), Linc Cod and Rock Fish. Our trips are a full day and once limited out there may be an opportunity to fish Feeder Kings or Silvers. Your day will include lunch, equipment, bait and fish processing. The 2006 Homer Halibut Derby winner, Duane Olson landed a 341 pounder and $43,612 in cash! For more derby info go to http://homerhalibutderby.com

Live the Alaska Dream!

Enjoy fishing Rocky or Windy River as you imagined how fishing would be so many times over in Alaska.

If fishing is your prime interest as is ours, we suggest you visit these Alaska Fish and Game pages to ensure your trip dates coincide with a spawn and the species you would like to fish for.  There is nothing more disappointing than misssing the action!
